Working with wires can be intimidating for someone who has never installed a ceiling fan, but the process is really straightforward. Almost anyone can successfully install his or her own ceiling fan without assistance.
Taking adequate safety precautions is of the first importance. Make sure that the power is off before you begin and take care that everyone in your house knows not to switch the power back on until you are completely finished with the installation. Pay close attention to all information and the safety precautions in the accompanying instructions.
Check to be sure that the ceiling fan will not overload the circuit.
Make sure you have enough space between the fan and the floor, seven or more feet is ideal. Find out how heavy the fan is, since a fan weighing over 30 pounds will need extra support.
Now you will need to install braces, called a mounting bracket, to hold the outlet box for the fan, or a hanger bar.
Take the larger screws and lock washers from the top of the decorative fan motor housing. Attach the mounting bracket to the ceiling with these screws and washers, There is a hole in the middle of the bracket; bring the wires down through this opening.
There should be four wires: the black wire, which is “hot” and will be connected to the fan motor, a red or blue wire (or striped) which is also hot and is for connecting the lights, a white neutral wire and a green wire. Firmly connect the white wire to the white wire from the house. The green wire is called a ground wire, and it needs to be connected to the corresponding green wire in the housing wire. If there is no green wire but there is an uncolored wire, attach the green wire to this wire. Make sure that all wires are pushed into the electric box, after checking that any wires that are not being used are capped.
The final step is to screw each blade into the fan using the screws and washers. Tighten the blades well.
